Halloween 2019
This was our first Halloween in Canada. Dave told the children Canadian’s don’t celebrate here, and they were all extremely bummed (close to tears) before I gave it away that he was joking.
We started the holiday with a trip to the pumpkin farm (which was actually a Christmas tree farm). Dave told the children they could each pick whichever pumpkin they wanted, so long as they could carry it themselves back to the wagon and then back to the car. Danny chose the very first pumpkin he saw, sure it was perfect. Jack and Maria both walked the entire patch and both initially chose pumpkins that were so large they couldn’t even carry them… but they tried to! After giving up, they each chose slightly smaller pumpkins, and sweated and huffed and puffed down the hill, taking many breaks, and alternating between carrying, rolling, and sitting on these wonderful pumpkins. They were determined to get the biggest ones they could carry… and were successful! Despite Dad’s big, tough words, he helped out by going to get the car so no one would have to wrangle their prizes through the parking lot.
We got a gift of the most beautiful cookies by Dave’s co-worker’s mom, and despite their young age, even the children appreciated the artistic cookies.
Halloween itself was a rainy day, but we all braved the rain, got soaking wet, and hit many, many houses. We stopped at home 1/2 way through the night to dump the candy bags; each child had a HUGE pile of candy by the end of the night. The next day, they exchanged almost all of their candy for a new lego set or craft project.
Dave missed the last 2 Halloweens because of work, so Mima and Aunt Merced came with us the last two years. It was awesome to be together as a family, but we missed our Aunt and Mima!
