Happy Halloween!

Witches and Werewolves and Eagles, oh my! (1).png

For weeks there were two burning questions: how many days until Halloween and will trick-or-treating be cancelled? Excitement was high! We had lots of Halloween art, talk, plans, decorating, and costume making.

The first question was easy to answer. Every morning we disregarded the countdown on our calendar and counted the days. The second was trickier.

The Pumpkin Patch

Our annual trip to the pumpkin patch was a bust. After everyone was up, and dressed, and excited to go, we found out you needed to book a time slot, and they were all booked (yes, I learned my lesson— our Christmas tree farm is already booked). Dave and I quickly adjusted the plan. Who needs a pumpkin patch, hay ride, and corn maze when there’s a nursery up the street and a Timmy’s around every corner?

Next came the costume store. Danny wanted to buy two costumes, but ultimately decided on a scary werewolf. Jack left undecided. Maria knew she wanted to be a beautiful witch, but couldn’t find what she was looking for.

Almost Halloween

We carved the pumpkins, and they came out great! Can you tell who carved each one?

Over the next several days the costumes came together. Jack and Danny ripped up some clothes to make Danny’s scary werewolf. He had a nightmare, but was determined to be something scary and not "babyish”, even if that meant not sleeping. Maria and I made her costume after a trip to the thrift and fabric stores. It was a lot of fun to bring her vision to life. I had to tell her enough is enough because after the dress, she wanted to make a broom out of sticks, get or make pointy shoes, make a cauldron, dye her hair black and silver, and buy glittery eye makeup. Jack decided on his costume the day before Halloween. I love all their different personalities!

The days before Halloween we got two Halloween care packages and some Halloween cards… so fun! We’re so blessed to have family who sends us love from far away.

Black and Orange Day & Halloween Cookies

The day before Halloween was Friday. The children weren’t allowed to wear their costumes to school (covid), but they did wear black and orange (and Eagles). It snowed for the first time this school year!

After school we decorated cookies- prebaked and packaged from a kit. Definitely the way to go! Most were gobbled up right away, but I managed to take a picture of the ones we saved for later.

Finally… Halloween Night!

The countdown to this night was more than 30 days long, but worth the wait. Trick-or-treating was NOT cancelled, and while many houses were dark, and some were decorated but not handing out candy, the houses that did offer candy overcompensated. I think we hauled in more candy this year than last year!

And here’s one more Halloween drawing of a “bunch of scary ghosts!,” because why not?
