Ontario Science Center
We visited the Ontario Science Center for the first time today. I was a little doubtful about going, because everyone was very content staying in pjs and two of the three were in near tears: “A museum? No!”
After a quick conference with Dave, who reaffirmed that it IS, indeed, worth the effort to get them all dressed (Did you brush your teeth? Yesterday’s teeth brushing doesn’t count!), pack lunches, warm the car, and get everyone out the door to have some mandatory fun.
I’m so glad we went!
Some of the highlights were:
—The green screen, where they produced their own music video. They took turns being in the video and at the control panel. They also practiced disappearing by wearing the green cape.
—Creating long roads with hills and loop-de-loops. They boys did this for a long time, and then tried trickier paths with ramps and jumps. —
—Constructing a house. All they had to do was put the foam blocks in the right places, but they had a lot of fun doing it.
—Shopping in the food store. They don’t do a ton of pretend play at home, but there’s something magical about a fully realized and realistic set up, and of course it’s fun to scan the groceries and demand money.
—Looking at x-ray sheets. I was surprised how much the sheets fascinated the children. One of the x-rays showed armpit germs which are shaped like worms, and Danny talked about the worms in his armpit all day. No matter what I say he can’t shake the idea that worms are living in his armpits. Yuck!
—Watching their first IMAX movie. The looks of utter wonder on their faces when they saw the domed movie screen was worth the admission price :)
The children had a blast, and we really only explored a small part of the museum. Upon leaving I bought the family membership, so I can hear protests next time we go, and then watch them have a wonderful, fun (and educational) time.
